It’s not often that the Bridgwater Industrialists don’t have a guest speaker at their meetings but when there is an opportunity to chat together the group benefits from the gathered, wide ranging experience in the room.

To tap into this knowledge source an open debate was held at our February, meeting where in true consultant’s style the members were asked to name the subjects they wanted to cover, on ‘post it’ notes and hand to the President who ‘skillfully’ managed proceedings.

With great enthusiasm each and every member present wrote two or three questions on the pads, they were arranged in some sort of order and the group discussed solutions to world peace and hunger.

Well not quite but almost – subjects covered ranged from feedback to the college. Should Greece leave the Euro? The plan for a Tesco store. Unemployment and skills training. An even the sending of late night e-mails from our secretary!

In working with Theresa Strange from the South West Apprenticeship Company, candidates will be selected to pursue this exciting and unique opportunity.

The apprentices are likely to have NVQ level II qualifications and will spend time in two or three of the companies, taking the best learning from each and eventually gaining a broader experience. This also benefits the companies as they also get a higher quality individual who can fit perfectly where a company has a requirement.

John Vieth, President of the Industrialists said, “It’s great that we can work together, to benefit young people and give them this special opportunity.”

Allison Griffin & Wendy White

The evening started with a welcome cocktail, followed by official photographs with part of the Viva La Diva dancing troup. Master of Ceremonies Martin Griffin, welcomed guests who were treated to a pre-dinner band Young Generation. This was followed by a cabaret with the members of Viva La Diva. After an excellent dinner our President John Vieth spoke about the charities and encouraged everyone to dig deep for a good cause. Viva La Diva performed again and the top ten raffle prizes were drawn. The guests were then able to demonstrate their own moves on the dance floor with the band “RiverBrew”. The silent auction results were announced and a disco completed the evening.

Official Photographs can be ordered from Timeless Images – Events – Webbington. The password is blacktie.

Murder Mystery – Yarn Market Hotel – Dunster

Members arrived to ‘Meet The Players’ at 7.15pm – and were introduced to all the characters and the scene was set!

Everyone took their seats and the first ‘scene’ was enacted. The actors walked around the restaurant acting out their parts in between the courses – will all listened to everything that was going on because basically every character seemed to have a ‘motive’.

An excellent dinner was served, and during the courses the actors sat with us to eat and moved to different tables for each course, so we all had a chance to talk to all of them and ask them some questions.

We then had the challenge of guessing the murderer by observing the final clues at the murder scene.

The winner was Ann Dyer from Blackmore Farm, who correctly guest the murderer and motives.

The AGM opened with a welcome to members, grace and lunch

1. Open AGM – State of the nation & review of previous year

An update was provided to members around the involvement of the Bridgwater Industrialists on various strategic groups and plans for the future of Bridgwater. This includes EDF, Bridgwater Vision, Bridgwater Retail Initiative. Exploring how the association can encourage new businesses into the town and continue to serve the membership for the next 50 years!

The visits to other businesses, interesting and informative speakers, and the social occasions enjoyed.

2. Treasurers report – Honorary Treasurer

Norman Hucker reported that our finances are in a better shape than that of the country of Greece!

Last year the fee structure was changed as follows.

Membership fees up by aprox. 10% to £220.00

Companies employing over 100 £350.00

New members £75.00 joining fee (to cover website input plus admin expenses) plus 10% of annual subs, as appropriate, for each remaining meeting of the year.

This resulted in a surplus of £767.63 on the year.

With the Presidents agreement, from the surpless, at the Charity Summer Ball on Friday 8th July, the association will present a cheque in the sum of £125.00 each to Breakthrough Breast Cancer and CLIC. Also that we give a raffle prize to the value of £100.00 premium bond on the night.

Smaller companies had asked if they might could pay a reduced subscription. It was explained that, should any member attend every meeting plus the presidents’ night, the total cost to the Association would amount close to the lower current fee and if charges were further reduced the A.B.I. would in such case be subsidising their dining costs.

With no further comments it was agreed that the charges remain the same as last year. Invoices will be issued as appropriate.

3. Election of officers

John Vieth – President for 2011/12

Chris Spencer – Vice President 2011/12 and President 2012/13

Norman Hucker – Honorary Treasurer 2011/12

Wendy White – Honorary Secretary & Webmistress 2011/12

4. Future events

Friday 24/6/11 – Murder Mystery at Dunster

Friday 8/7/11 – Charity Ball – Webbington

Friday 16/9/11 – Visit to Jasun Filtration, folled by Dinner at Bower Green Restaurant

Friday 21/10/11 – Speaker Alan Hurford – Bridgwater Town Clerk

Saturday 19/11/11 – Presidents Dinner (Social occasion with partners) – Walnut Tree – North Petherton

5. Way forward & Projects

Lead organiser – Chris Spencer.

Group business project for Bridgwater – working with education sector, engaging young people and teachers with businesses.

Apprenticeship scheme.

Industrialists opportunity to share an apprentice, this would be an excellent opportunity for a young person to gain a broad experience of working across a number of companies. The South West Apprenticeship Company (SWAC) provides an alternative way for businesses to take on an apprentice. Through the SWAC model businesses do not directly employ the apprentice, instead SWAC employs the apprentice, and the business becomes the ‘host’ employer. In this case the ‘cluster’ of businesses would be the apprentice’s ‘hosts’. SWAC also specialises in the recruitment of high calibre young people, facilitating the set up of apprenticeships with a local provider, in this case Bridgwater College, and providing payroll, HR and performance management functions.

To progress this a meeting will be arranged with any interested parties to establish how an apprenticeship could benefit each business and to establish what ‘job role’ the apprentice would do, there would need to be some comparability to cover all elements of a particular apprenticeship framework such as Business Administration . Also to give some consideration to a timetable e.g. how many days in each organisation? Would it be a number of weeks placement in each business or 1 day a week?

SWAC would screen all applicants, conduct assessments to measure potential, and match them to the requirements of the hosts.

Once the apprentice has completed their apprenticeship and if none of ‘hosts’ are able to offer a fulltime or permanent position, then SWAC would provide advice, guidance and support to help that apprentice find employment.

The cost of hosting an apprentice would be as follows: agreed hourly rate x number of hours + £35 per week (SWAC management fee) + VAT. This cost can be shared by the hosts.

Feedback and further suggestions/ideas/volunteers, to help organise events welcome.

John Vieth and Norman Hucker welcomed our guest speakers from Churchill Investments PLC, who gave members an informative talk about NEST and group pensions.

“Workplace pensions law is changing and EVERY employer will have to act.

The new law requires all employers with at least one employee to automatically enroll members of their workforce into a suitable pension scheme and make contributions into that scheme.

The law comes into force for employers between 2012 and 2016,but it is important to plan for it and be prepared for the changes.

At Churchill Investments we are helping employers prepare for these changes and as part of that process we have been presenting to employer groups such as yourselves.

The question and answer session was interesting and lively as the changes in pensions were debated!

If you would like a more in depth look at your existing pension arrangements and how this change in the law will impact your business then please call in the first instance;

A hardcopy of the presentation is available on request, please email Wendy directly to arrange this.

Blackmore Farm in Cannington, Somerset has been named AA Guest Accommodation of the Year for England 2011-2012, beating off stiff competition from all over the country.

Blackmore Farm is a working dairy farm that is situated on the outskirts of the village of Cannington, near Bridgwater and offers guests luxury, traditional farmhouse accommodation. The accommodation is situated in the 15th Century Manor House, a converted cowshed and a converted cider press. Proprietors Ian and Ann Dyer have faithfully restored and converted the guest rooms to retain old world charm yet with all the modern comforts for today’s visitors to enjoy. Blackmore Farm has 7 guestrooms that are all en-suite and there is a self-catering option in the Cider Press.

Guests are served a delicious traditional farmhouse breakfast in the Great Hall which is a truly atmospheric room complete with knights in armour to watch over you and a huge open fire place.

Ian and Ann have been receiving bed and breakfast guests in their home for the last 22 years. They were both shocked and delighted to be recognized by the AA for their hard work at the Awards Ceremony in London on Monday 16th May. Ian said, “We are over the moon to win this award as recognition of the hard work that both ourselves and the staff do to make sure that our guests have a terrific and memorable stay.”

Blackmore Farm has also branched out with a Farm Shop, Café and award winning ice cream.

Our president welcomed Theresa Strange to the April meeting. After an excellent dinner, Theresa provided a valuable insight into how the South West Apprenticeship company (SWAC) operates, and the potential benefits to business.

Apprenticeships bring in the skills and talent your business needs to flourish. Regardless of the size or nature of your enterprise, Apprenticeships will contribute to your company’s success. They are precisely tailored to meet your requirements and will develop capable and committed employees.

Perform and Compete

Apprenticeships ensure that your workforce has the skills and qualifications it needs both now and in the future. Apprenticeships are the ideal way to attract talented and enthusiastic people into your business. They reduce staff turnover and increase employee motivation and performance. Apprentices tend to be flexible, loyal employees who make companies more effective, productive and competitive.

South West Apprenticeship Company (SWAC) brings a fresh approach to Apprenticeships.

SWAC removes the risk by employing the apprentice ourselves. Apprentices are then placed with ‘Host Organisations’ for the duration of their Apprenticeship. We identify employers who want apprentices, match them with suitable candidates and organise the delivery of training with colleges or private training providers. We plan, manage and administer the programme, and provide continual support and progress monitoring of your SWAC apprentice. We ensure things run smoothly and resolve any problems to make placements successful for both the apprentice and Host Organisation.

To find out how an apprentice can benefit your business : Call 0800 334 5767 email info@theswac.org.uk web www.theswac.org.uk

or Call Theresa Strange on 07801 200 601

Opening of Energy Skills Centre at Bridgwater College

A state-of-the-art facility for teaching sustainable energy techniques and alternative energy innovations was formally opened last week by the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, the Rt Hon Chris Huhne MP.

The Energy Skills Centre at Bridgwater College is the first of its kind in the South West and forms a key part of plans to deliver the region’s economic and skills development objectives. It represents an £8 million investment by funders EDF Energy, the National Skills Academy (Nuclear), the South West Regional Development Agency and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. Further industry support has been provided in the form of sponsorship from EnergySolutions and the Kier Group. Sedgemoor District Council has also supported the project through the donation of the land on which the Centre is built.

The Energy Skills Centre reinforces the position of Bridgwater College as one of the leading training providers for the nuclear and sustainable energy sectors. The 2800 m2 facility has been designed to meet the growing demand for training in science and engineering from local employers. Raised in Bridgwater he started his career in manufacturing at Courtaulds (Cellophane) at the age of 16. He is a passionate supporter of local industry and shared why with members in an interesting and informative overview – Making it in the SouthWest.

What is MAS?

MAS launched in 2002, and is designed to help you, the manufacturer, grow your business, develop new products, introduce new and streamlined processes and continually adapt to ever changing market needs. Currently, funded by the South West Regional Development Agency (SWRDA) through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

The experienced and highly skilled practitioners have the ‘hands on’ experience of shop floor working and business management skills needed to help you identify improvement opportunities add deliver sustainable change. They will work directly with you and your workforce to ensure that your business is run in the best way possible.

In the SouthWest there are 13500 registered manufacturing and engineering companies, of which 500 have 250+ employees, 3000 have 10- 250 employees, and 10000 have 1-9 employees. Somerset has approximately 1500 companies, around 30 have 250+ employees, 370 have 10-250 employees, and 1100 1-9 employees.

MAS is working with thousands of companies, and it now plays a vital role in helping UK manufacturers to grow, share knowledge, improve productivity and achieve success in an increasing competitive global economy.

MAS can provide subsidised support to help UK SME manufacturers access the growing civil nuclear market, and have also compiled some useful information about the components, technology and supply chain opportunities as new nuclear power stations are rolled out across the UK between now and 2025.

The awards ceremony, held at the Somerset County Cricket Ground in Taunton, was attended by nearly 300 people and was a sell-out event. Bridgwater College assisted the organisers, the Somerset Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of Small Businesses, by producing films of the 42 shortlisted entries. These were shown during the awards ceremony and the students provided a live feed of the event within the venue.

Rupert Cox, Chief Executive of the Somerset Chamber of Commerce, explained, “We asked the students to produce a 10 second film of each of the nominees and 90 second films of the winners, as well as provide a live feed at the event. We are delighted with what the students were able to do in such a short time frame. The Somerset Business Awards aims to promote entrepreneurialism across the county and we hope that this partnership will encourage younger generations to take an interest in Somerset’s vibrant business community.”

Alan Hardcastle, media course programme manager at Bridgwater College, added, “We encourage our students to be proactive and entrepreneurial – some of the students who attended the awards were doing so to promote their own media production business! Making these films gives the students a great opportunity to network, and many go on to build successful freelance careers from this sort of introduction. It also helps local businesses to see what media opportunities are available and that they have access to media professionals locally, with the skills to promote their business.”

John only has a small family in the UK since his great grandfather came to England from Germany before the first war. Now he has a new ‘cousin’ in Wisconsin whose family also originates from the same region in central Germany.

John said “it was really weird meeting someone with the same unusual name, particularly as I’ve never come across another Vieth other than immediate family. The newfound American branch are such lovely people and I felt we had known each other forever”.

John from America is hoping to make the return trip to experience Stonehenge at daybreak on midsummer’s day.

We were able to witness how the plants are nurtured and cropped to provide a consistently high quality product, in enormous volumes, perfectly fresh and just in time. The visit was a fascinating experience of how farming has developed for everyone’s benefit.

Members enjoyed a trip on the Quantock Belle Dining Train service on the scenic West Somerset Railway between Bishops Lydeard (near Taunton) and Minehead, recreating the nostalgic atmosphere of the days of steam.

Diners enjoyed good food and great company as the train wound its leisurely way through the beautiful Quantock Hills past the ancient port of Watchet and along the coastline at Blue Anchor Bay.

During our journey, the attentive stewards and wine waiters provided a ‘First Class’ dining service at our tables, allowing us to relax and enjoy our trip.

A three course luncheon was served on the outward journey to Minehead, where we had the afternoon free to explore the gardens, beaches, shops or harbour of this pleasant seaside town. A Somerset Cream Tea was served on the return journey to Bishops Lydeard

We found dining on the Quantock Belle a delightful and memorable experience. If only the train to Paddington was so pleasurable.

1. Introduction

John Vieth noted apologies for absence and ran through a summary of the last 12 months.

Interesting range of speakers including; Business Link, Local MP, PardoeBevins, Sedgemoor District Council and others.

Visits to House of Commons & London Eye, more recently, Cannington Cold Store and CCTV.

Represented ABI at several partnership meetings and reviewing how our organisation can work with them and develop for our members.

Raised our profile and produced publicity flyers and our website continues to develop.

Socially, we have enjoyed:-

Presidents Dinner at Blackmore Farm with guest speaker Roger Evans.

Charity golf match which raised £500 for St Margarets Hospice.

Dunster Show with excellent hospitality and entertainment from Nigel!

Indoor Bowls at North Petherton, I have joined and am currently having lessons

Society 4 Ball at Enmore Park (Pardoes, Team Growers and Wendy)

2. Accounts

Norman Hucker presented a summary of the annual accounts. A copy of this can be supplied to members on request. All costs are currently covered and there is a small balance in the account.

3. Election of Officers

Wendy White explained that whilst traditionally the President selected a successor, John wished to offer a vote to the members. This resulted in a resounding vote to re-elect him, so no hung parliament or coalition!. It was agreed that Norman & Wendy continued in their roles as Treasurer and Secretary.

Nigel Davies (Pantec Engineering), on behalf of members, thanked John and his team for all the hard work undertaken.

4.Moving Forward – 2010/11 President – John Veith

John reported success of the “bring a guest” which has helped increase awareness and membership during 2009/10. We plan to continue this arrangement & members are reminded that there is a £10 fee towards the lunch for each guest. We all learn from each other, enjoy the networking, visits and social occasions with partners or colleagues. The association is well respected in the town and has a good history. We will continue to be a voice with the local authority, lobbying MP and working with potential investors into the area e.g Morrisions, EDF, Building Schools for the future.

We need to be involved in the beginning to understand the impact on employment and infrastructure.

5. AOB

Dates for meetings in 2010/11 will be advised and posted on website.

We have speakers in place for remainder of 2010. Please pass ideas/volunteers for future speakers/visits/socials to Wendy.

Wendy is now webmistress, having completed further training. Half of our members have information on the Company Profile Page so please contact Wendy if you want to add information about your business. Photographs of individual members could help other members put a face to a name, now we are a larger gathering. There is also the opportunity to add video clips etc.

The Somerset Railway Trip is fully booked with reserve list in September 2010.

Usually, we do not meet in July/August but this year we will be planning a visit to ACC Chemicals so there is not such a long break. Wendy will advise dates shortly.

John asked that Grace be said at each meeting.

Next meeting 18th June – Speaker Wendy Wills – MD of Ways2Win. Both Wendy and I will be away, so Norman Hucker will be in the Chair.

There being no other business the meeting closed at 2.30pm

They are a 24/7 service monitoring 170 CCTV cameras in Bridgwater, Burnham-on-Sea, Cheddar and North Petherton. They also work in partnership with Taunton Deane Borough Council and South Somerset District Council, monitoring the CCTV systems in Taunton, Wellington and Yeovil. All CCTV images are recorded 24/7 and are kept for a minimum of 31 days.

Members were made very welcome by staff at the venue, and each team was provided with a coach. After a bit of practice, the real competition got going. There was some keen rivalry. In particular between the ladies and men on the Presidents team. We were lucky enough to have a County Level player – Peter Shaw – who demonstrated to us how it really should be done. Peter Shaw showed us that bowls is a game that can be enjoyed by all ages and how other younger people, like himself, were enjoying the sport.

Our President has signed up and is currently taking lessons, so watch this space!

Tim Roe, director of Cannington Cold Stores welcomed a large group of members. All were keen to explore how the business was now able to generate its own power!

He said: “It all started one day when we renewed our energy contract. In four years the price had gone up 72 per cent, it is a huge price and cost to the business from week to week.

“We went to Germany where there are lots of biogas plants and realised it seemed silly to pay for electricity when we could make it and keep it in house.”

Price was the main driver to build the plant, as electricity was the only cost, which was out of Mr Roe’s control and he said he was ‘delighted’ to be able to do something about it.

The planning process for the plant took over a year and there were some initial objections from locals who were concerned about odours and the affect in the surrounding area. In fact, there is no odour, the system is an anaerobic one so if air is getting in or out it is not working to its optimum.

The plant produces around 500kW per year, with 300kW used in the cold stores and the rest going to the National Grid.

The energy is generated by yogurt residue from Yeo Valley, based less than a mile away, and from fruit juice residue from Gerber Juice, who are in nearby Bridgwater.

The plant will also take feedstock – maize and grass silage – from the family arable farm and from other farms close by, and Mr Roe said the ROC system meant the plant could ‘stand up’ financially.

Following the visit the members went onto Blackmore Farm for a feast of a lunch.

Doug Bamsey, Corporate Director Regeneration Sedgemoor District Council, gave an interesting and informative update on the topic of the “Bridgwater Challenge”.

The vision for Bridgwater is that in 2060 the town will be energy conscious, known for its ambitious approach to sustainability and low carbon living.

Bridgwater will be seen as a place that has been re-energised into a confident town through its strong, innovative architecture, its vibrant town centre and its revitalised neighbourhoods – encouraging a greater sense of local community, well being and civic pride.

The vision includes a range of regeneration projects designed to revitalise place and inspire investment and growth. For example, making the most of the River at the heart of the town, exemplary schools, connected transport, improving housing, delivering its flooding solution, the Parrett Barrier, and providing outstanding health and recreation facilities. Bridgwater will continue to attract new investment, maintaining its new position, as a regional centre of enterprise excellence.

Doug Bamsey represents Sedgemoor District Council as a member of the Bridgwater Industrialists and is town planner by profession, having graduated with a Geography Masters from the University of Toronto. He has over 25 years experience in local government across a diverse range of local authorities in the south east and south west of England. He has been a Corporate Director at Sedgemoor for over 10 years. He has lead responsibility for the Council’s economic development, planning policy, development management and housing enabling activities. Doug has taken the leadership role and responsibility for a wide range of development and regeneration projects. This has required effective partnership working with national, regional and local organisations and the community. These projects have resulted in substantial community benefits. For the last 2 years he has led the Council’s response to the Government’s and the nuclear industry’s emerging proposals for a new nuclear power station at Hinkley point. More recently, he has also taken the lead in responding to National Grid’s associated proposals for transmission line upgrades.

Tuesday 13th October 2009 – Visit to Palace of Westminster

A full coach of members and guests left Bridgwater at 6.3Oam. We arrived in London to glorious sunshine. After passing through strict security we were met by Ian Liddell-Grainger and introduced to our tour guide. We received a fascinating tour of the Commons and House of Lords, soaking up the history as we walked around. It looks so much bigger on the television! All too soon we were off to our leisurely lunch at a nearby Italian Restaurant. This was followed by a “Fast Track” flight on the London Eye and a 4D film. With clear skies we could see for miles and enjoyed identifying local landmarks from our birds eye view. After some time at leisure to visit other local attractions we were off on the coach home. A note of thanks goes to our Secretary Wendy White for organising such a memorable day and to Ian Liddell-Grainger and his secretary, Claire Gibson, for inviting us on a tour of the house.

The “52nd Presidents Dinner” was a resounding success. The ladies looked splendid, the food & wine was excellent and Roger Evans kept every-one’s attention with his haunting experience’s and tales of local ghost history. The beautiful banquet hall at Blackmore Farm added to the atmosphere of the occasion – was it the draft from the door that made the lights dim!!

One of our new members Chris Spencer (Partner Pardoes) hand the honour of making the toast to the ladies.

Whilst the dinner is the key social event of the year for the association, our President “John Vieth” took the opportunity to review the progress of the Bridgwater Industrialists and the opportunities on the horizons for our members and the wider local business community.

John said “Taking a quick look back upon 2009, the last 12 months has seen a rapid economic decline, leading to the longest recession since the 1930s. This meant some difficult decisions had to be made, but that’s what stands us apart as managers, directors and proprietors. Now we are all looking for the first shoots of recovery and hopefully some may have seen a recent upturn.

Local business potential looks very rosy. There are amazing opportunities for the area, much better than most. For example –

‘Building schools for the future’, developing 4 secondary schools costing £100m, which is great for local business and even better for further generations.

We are building a new hospital and all the associated services.

There is Challenge Bridgwater, which has created a vision and now we must find a way to convert this vision into reality.

And of course, new power stations, which cost £5bn each and we are having 2. This will have a truly massif influence on the local economy, EDF say they spend 1.5% in the local supply chain, but that’s only £15m, we can do better than that.

Individual companies must make their own approaches; perhaps we are stronger as a group, should we form a consortium or even a joint venture? Whatever the route to market we must take full advantage.

This town has truly great opportunities, for business and for the community. It’s up to us to make them happen and to cash in on them.

The association has also enjoyed a great year:–

We have had good attendance at our meetings and a steadily growing membership. In the social calendar we enjoyed the hospitality at the Dunster Show where we watched a display of trick horse riding. We also saw a flying display of Eagles and Hawks as a vulture circled ominously above certain parts of the crowd.

We had a Charity Golf match at Enmore, raising £500 for St Margaret’s Hospicea in memory of our dear friend Ken Dewer.

We had a fantastic trip to the Palace of Westminster. The guide made the tour a fascinating experience and the London Eye was great fun also. It was a great day out.

We need to continue to encourage new members, then in turn we can influence decision makers, take advantage of the opportunities that will arise, we will make changes happen, for we are being heard and noticed and we can be proud of our town and help it’s prosperity.”

You can live in real market towns and villages, enjoy short commute times and make the most of the countryside, the coast and the clean air.

At the heart of the £90 billion economy of the South West, Somerset has the highest business start up rates outside of London. Our economy is a magic mix of multinationals and niche entrepreneurs with markets worldwide.

Association President for 2009 – John Vieth- invited members to attend the Dunster Show as sponsored VIP guests. It was a real treat to have ring side seats and an excellent lunch in the main marquee. The main ring was full of activity all day with a range of classes showcasing magnificent livestock of all sizes. Inbetween there were performances from bird of prey handlers to the Wild West Stunt Riders who kept everyone holding their breath or sitting on the edge of their seats.

The showground was full of a wide variety of vendors selling an interesting range of goods and produce, much of which was produced locally. Nobody left the show empty handed!

Caroline Coleman, HM Inspector of Health & Safety was a guest speaker at our June meeting. She addressed to the association regarding the role of the H&S Executive.
The main purpose of the HS Executive is to:-

Review protection & to reduce risk of accidents in the workplace.

Develop laws and set standards

Measure trends

Provide information (via website/visits etc)

How this is done:-

Inspect premises (can do free consultations) Inspections should be every 3 years, but staff shortages and funding may extend this period. They have a database of businesses and will often select a visit via postcode. Or if an incident has been reported.

Investigate Accidents

Monitor ill health e.g Asbestos

Outcomes:-

Provide advice & guidance

Power to serve notices

Issue of prohibition notice (stop work)

Prosecute and fine

RISK ASSESSMENTS

People are often afraid of doing these, but we all make risk assessments every day. If you cross the road you ensure there is nothing coming before you step out. There are many companies out there who “specialise” in particular areas but common sense can be applied in your workplace.

Look at risk

Who could be harmed

How

How can you reduce risk.

It is very important to document risks and review on a regular basis – if anything changes.

HSE work with local authority – Local authority partnership projects.

Remember – GOOD HEALTH EQUALS GOOD BUSINESS.

Mr Neil Parish is one of three Conservative MEP’s for The South West of England and Gibraltar and is Chairman of the European Parliament’s Agriculture Committee.

An extremely interesting talk was given by Mr Parish at our meeting. It was an eye opener to find out about the internal struggles of the European Union within Brussels and Strasburg.

It was clear to our members that the EU has a significant affect on commercial business development and some members were keen to express the effect of bureaucracy on small businesses.

Mr Parish had a good understanding of small business and farming as he had previously managed his own family farm.

All were appreciative of his visit and he has said that we may be able to arrange a visit to Brussels in the future.

Ken had been President of The Association of Bridgwater Industrialists until April this year and previously in 1975, 1991 and 2006-7. Even when he was not President, he was still working behind the scenes to attract new members and invite guest speakers

Ken was a charming well liked man, who found time to be involved in many organisations in Bridgwater; He was Chairman of Governors at Haygrove School, Chairman of the Enmore and District Gardening Club a Rotarian and an excellent Skillter!

He was also a past Chairman of the Bridgwater Conservatives and was the agent for former Bridgwater MP Tom King. He was awarded the OBE in 1993 for Political and other services.

Ken was married to Doreen for 59 years and had two children, Neill and Fiona of whom he was very proud.

He will be missed by all of us in the Association and beyond and we will be talking about him for many years to come.

A minutes silence was held at the opening of the Association’s AGM in memeory of Ken.

Members of the Association of Bridgwater Industrialists (20 Club) visited Hinkley Point A Site to see at first hand the progress of decommissioning being made on the Site, which ceased generation in May 2000.

The Membership of the Industrialists is drawn from Directors of Industrial and Commercial firms in Bridgwater and the surrounding area. Sedgemoor District Council and Bridgwater College are also represented. The group meet to keep abreast of current day concerns of employment and the successes of the area and Mark Lesinski, Site Director of Hinkley Point A Site was delighted to welcome them.

This year marks the association’s 50th anniversary and John Vieth, Commercial Manager at Hinkley Point A and member of the Industrialists Association, organised the visit to highlight their activities and the positive forum they offer in the town.

Tim Watkins, Lead Team member at Hinkley Point A , gave a complete review of the history of the station and explained the recent changes and challenges associated with decommissioning before an extensive site tour. For some there was a distinct sense of nostalgia on arriving at the turbine hall to find it completely bare of machinery.

A vote of thanks for the hospitality and thoroughness of the tour was given by the Association of Bridgwater Industrialists president, Mr. J. K. Dewar O.B.E. who later commented “knowledge of how Power Stations work, their safety and security measures and world wide knowledge base makes me much more comfortable about living close to Hinkley Point. We need reliable power generation now and in the future. Every option available has its price to the community, employment and the environment. There will always be arguments for and against. Hinkley Point can demonstrate a professional well managed operation that is open with the community and business partners. It also has an impressive safety record”
