Simon Howes, Managing Director of the SouthWest Manufacturing Advisory Service has 27 years industry experience. Raised in Bridgwater he started his career in manufacturing at Courtaulds (Cellophane) at the age of 16.  He is a passionate supporter of local industry and shared why with members in an interesting and informative overview – Making it in the SouthWest.

What is MAS?

MAS launched in 2002, and is designed to help you, the manufacturer, grow your business, develop new products, introduce new and streamlined processes and continually adapt to ever changing market needs. Currently, funded by the South West Regional Development Agency (SWRDA) through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

The experienced and highly skilled practitioners have the ‘hands on’ experience of shop floor working and business management skills needed to help you identify improvement opportunities add deliver sustainable change. They will work directly with you and your workforce to ensure that your business is run in the best way possible.

In the SouthWest there are 13500 registered manufacturing and engineering companies, of which 500 have 250+ employees, 3000 have 10- 250 employees, and 10000 have 1-9 employees.  Somerset has approximately 1500 companies, around 30 have 250+ employees, 370 have 10-250 employees, and 1100 1-9 employees.

MAS is working with thousands of companies, and it now plays a vital role in helping UK manufacturers to grow, share knowledge, improve productivity and achieve success in an increasing competitive global economy.

MAS can provide subsidised support to help UK SME manufacturers access the growing civil nuclear market, and  have also compiled some useful information about the components, technology and supply chain opportunities as new nuclear power stations are rolled out across the UK between now and 2025.
